The Lagos State Government has said that the city loses about ₦1 trillion every year because of the long hours people spend in traffic.
According to Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, people in Lagos spend an average of six hours each day stuck in traffic. This greatly affects productivity and the economy.
Giwa shared this information during the opening of the Second Lagos Traffic Conference at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.
The event is part of the activities celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
He also said that LASTMA’s efforts have already helped the state recover about ₦4 billion worth of productivity that was previously lost to traffic problems.
The theme of the three-day conference is:
“Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, officially opened the event.
The conference brought together experts in transportation, urban planning, government, law enforcement, and the private sector to discuss traffic solutions.
A major moment at the event was the launch of the Lagos State 20-Year Strategic Traffic Management Policy by LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.
This long-term plan aims to improve the state’s traffic and transport system by:
Upgrading road infrastructure
Strengthening enforcement of traffic laws
Promoting smart transport solutions
The goal is to make commuting in Lagos easier, safer, and more efficient.
