Members of the Agbekoya Society of Nigeria on Wednesday evening have rescued a young man attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge near the UNILAG waterfront.
The incident occurred as the Agbekoya delegation, led by its President General, Aare Kamorudeen Okikiola, was returning from a high-level courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade – mni, psc, Zone 2 Command, in Onikan, Lagos.
The visit was part of the Society’s renewed effort to support the Nigeria Police in strengthening community policing across Yorubaland.
According to eyewitnesses, the Agbekoya convoy was heading towards the mainland when they noticed unusual activity by the edge of the bridge.
Without hesitation, the President General ordered an emergency stop.
Members of the Agbekoya team swiftly intervened, physically restraining the young man who was moments away from leaping into the lagoon.
“We were just returning from a fruitful meeting with the AIG when we saw him. God used us today,” said Aare Kamorudeen, visibly moved by the encounter.
“This is exactly what our mission is about protecting lives, restoring hope, and partnering with the police for a safer society.”
The rescued individual, believed to be in his early thirties, was later handed over to the Berger Pin down of Bariga Police Division response unit and taken for medical and psychological evaluation.
The Agbekoya Society’s swift action has been praised on social media and by civil society groups, with many commending their timely intervention and reaffirming the need for closer collaboration between cultural institutions and formal security agencies.
Earlier in the day, the Agbekoya team had engaged in discussions with the AIG Zone 2, Adegoke Fayoade – mni, psc, on issues bordering on farm security, grassroots intelligence, and the urgent need to clamp down on impersonators using the Agbekoya name for criminal activities.
As the rescued youth receives the care he needs, today’s events serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of community vigilance, swift action, and compassion.
