Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a heartfelt message of condolence to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, expressing deep sorrow over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu.
Buhari died on July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Chinese government and people, Xi praised Buhari as a pivotal leader who not only advanced Nigeria’s national unity and progress but also played a significant role in fostering Nigeria-China relations and broader China-Africa cooperation.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985, was lauded by Xi for his dedication to carving a development path suited to Nigeria’s unique conditions.
“President Buhari was an important leader of Nigeria, highly respected in the international community,” Xi said, according to a statement released by Xinhua News Agency.
“His passing represents a tremendous loss to the Nigerian people and the loss of a dear friend to the Chinese people.”
Xi highlighted Buhari’s steadfast commitment to the Nigeria-China strategic partnership, noting that during his presidency, bilateral ties saw significant growth.
The two nations marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2021, with Xi and Buhari exchanging congratulatory messages emphasizing enhanced political trust and mutually beneficial economic cooperation.
Xi recalled Buhari’s appreciation for China’s support in infrastructure projects, including railways and highways, which bolstered Nigeria’s economic development.
The Chinese leader specifically pointed to Buhari’s active participation in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), particularly the 2018 Beijing Summit, which Xi described as a historic milestone for China-Africa solidarity.
“Buhari’s efforts in promoting Nigeria-China friendship and advancing the FOCAC agenda brought tangible benefits to both our peoples,” Xi stated, underscoring the late leader’s role in securing projects like West Africa’s first modern tramway in Nigeria, a symbol of Chinese technological support.
Xi’s condolence message also extended sympathy to Buhari’s family, the Nigerian government, and its citizens, reflecting the deep ties forged during Buhari’s tenure.
