Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has cried out over the increase in fake drugs circulation in the country.
Njoku took to her Instagram page on Wednesday to address the issue, stating that NAFDAC has to act fast.
The actress recalled a recent incident where she had an health emergency and purchased a drug from a pharmacy. She noted that despite using the mediation as prescribed, it did not help with her symptoms.
“I want to share a recent experience: I had food poisoning on a set and sent a staff member to buy Imodium from a well-known pharmacy chain in Nigeria. A medication I’ve used many times before. I took it for about three days but my symptoms persisted,” she stated.
Njoku however, noted that her husband offered her the same drug he purchased abroad and she felt relief in minutes.
She called out NAFDAC to look into the possibility of a spread of fake drugs. Njoku also emphasised the urgency of the situation and how dangerous it is to Nigerians.
“Then my husband bought a tiny tablet of the same Imodium from abroad and after taking it, my stomach issues subsided within just five minutes. This isn’t the first time I have noticed a difference. So I have to ask: What exactly are we being sold in Nigeria? What’s going on with our drugs?. This is a public health risk and NAFDAC must take it seriously. This is very dangerous,” she wrote.
