Tinubu to lead special FEC session Thursday in honour of Buhari
President Bola Tinubu will on Thursday, July 17, 2025, preside over a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The session, which was earlier scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to the delay in bringing Buhari’s remains from London and the declaration of a public holiday to mark his passing.
The development was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced the new date via his X handle on Wednesday.
“A special session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held on Thursday 17 July from 1 pm. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the session of tributes for the departed leader,” Onanuga wrote.
Earlier, the presidency had explained that the initial meeting could not hold as planned because of the state funeral scheduled in Daura, Katsina State, on the same day.
President Tinubu had in his tribute described Buhari as a towering figure in Nigeria’s history, stating that the former leader will be accorded full state honours.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” the President said in a statement issued on Sunday.
The Federal Government had also declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of Buhari.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at about 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness.
