President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri in Borno State as Muhammadu Buhari University has been widely praised as a fitting tribute to the late former President, who passed away on July 13, 2025.

The announcement, made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the State House in Abuja, was commended by political analyst and commentator Reno Omokri for its symbolic and strategic significance.

Omokri, in a statement shared via his X account, expressed admiration for Tinubu’s gesture, stating, “I must commend President Bola Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri after President Muhammadu Buhari. Not only has President Tinubu shown that he is a loyal and worthy ally of General Buhari, but he has also demonstrated that service to Nigeria has its reward.”

He highlighted the renaming as an incentive for future leaders, noting, “By this act, any future President of Nigeria will be spurred on to leave behind the best legacy possible so that when they leave that office and this world, a grateful nation can reward and remember them.”

The choice of the University of Maiduguri, located in Borno State, was described by Omokri as “brilliant and strategic,” given Buhari’s familial ties to the region through his Kanuri mother.

“This will help soothe the feelings of loss felt by his kith and kin and make them understand that Nigeria appreciated what their son did in governance,” Omokri added.

The renaming is seen as a gesture to honor Buhari’s contributions as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, particularly his efforts in promoting national unity and combating corruption.

The decision follows a series of national tributes, including a state funeral in Daura, Katsina State, and a seven-day period of mourning.

Omokri concluded his remarks with a call for the institution’s longevity, stating, “Long live the Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. Miyetti, Mr. President.” He also extended blessings to Tinubu and Nigeria for the gesture.
