Friday, July 18, 2025, marked a momentous day for residents of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), as outgoing Chairman, Hon. Rasaq Olusola Ajala, formally commissioned five landmark projects in a fitting conclusion to his transformative eight-year tenure.

The event, which was both celebratory and reflective, attracted a host of dignitaries, including political leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, and community stakeholders.

The event also served as a testament to Ajala’s commitment to infrastructural development and grassroots empowerment throughout his two terms in office.

Five Signature Projects Unveiled

The projects unveiled included the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Legacy Building, the Jide Sanwo-Olu Football Arena, a 9.2-kilometre road network, nine solar-powered charging booths, and the handover of 13 operational vehicles to key stakeholders.

In his farewell speech, Ajala expressed deep gratitude to the people of the LCDA for their unwavering support.

He described the projects as a fulfillment of the promises he made under a “social contract” with the residents.

“We promised to deliver, and we have fulfilled our commitments. From infrastructure and social intervention to youth empowerment and security, our administration has transformed this LCDA into an enviable community,” Ajala stated.

A Legacy Etched in Concrete and Progress

Topping the list of accomplishments is the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Legacy Building—a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose complex housing a 2,500-capacity soundproof event hall, an e-library-equipped Resource Centre, a Legislative Chamber, a Health Clinic, a Lounge, an electric lift, and 186 offices. Ajala described it as a vital revenue-generating facility that will serve future administrations.

The Jide Sanwo-Olu Football Arena, a modern mini-stadium, was also inaugurated. Designed to promote sports and youth development, the facility provides a professional-grade football pitch for aspiring athletes in the LCDA.

To support small businesses and digital access, nine solar-powered charging booths—one in each ward—were launched. Each booth is capable of charging up to 50 devices simultaneously, targeting local vendors, especially POS operators.

Further deepening community engagement, 13 operational vehicles were officially handed over to traditional rulers, religious groups—including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Islamic leaders—school administrators, political structures, and youth bodies like the National Youth Council of Nigeria.

Over 100 Roads Delivered in Eight Years

Ajala highlighted his administration’s remarkable record of delivering more than 100 roads during his tenure.

The newly commissioned 9.2km stretch links several key communities, including Ikeolu, Adekola, Agunbiade, Church Street, Shosanya, Olowo, Alile, and Awoyokun.

He also cited the establishment of the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Transportation and Environmental Corps (OTEC), which enforces traffic regulations and sanitation, alongside the procurement of two waste compactors to improve waste management and drive revenue through recycling initiatives.

Dignitaries Shower Praises

The event was graced by a distinguished lineup of guests, including:

  • Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat

  • Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele

Hamzat: “Lagos Is Breaking Barriers”

Dep Gov. Dr Obafemi Kadri Hamzat: speaking at the event.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Hamzat praised Ajala’s legacy and placed it within the broader success story of Lagos under the APC.

He recalled recent infrastructural milestones across the state, including the launch of Nigeria’s first LG-owned radio station and the continued progress of the Lagos rail project.

“Lagos is the only place in the world that has executed a rail project using a balanced sheet,” Hamzat said. “Three days ago, we were in Mosan-Okunola commissioning another legacy building. These are not coincidences; they are results of consistent leadership. We must support continuity by preparing our voter cards for 2027.”

He addressed the skepticism that once surrounded the state’s rail infrastructure.

“People didn’t understand what pile foundations were. We used 111 piles to support the rail in water—those same foundations are what keep the train going today.”

Bamidele Drops Political Bombshell

Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele speaking at the event.

Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, hinted at an impending political shake-up, revealing that a wave of defections to the APC is expected when the National Assembly reconvenes.

“As Senate Leader, I can confirm that 90 percent of our colleagues from the opposition are ready to join APC. By Tuesday, you’ll witness this movement,” he said.

He also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s commendation of the leadership in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye for its achievements.

Commendations and a Call for Continuity

Other dignitaries lauded Ajala for his vision and leadership. Senator Ganiyu Solomon described the projects as a product of inclusive governance, urging the incoming administration to maintain the pace. Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, APC State Chairman, highlighted Ajala’s effective coordination of Conference 57, which comprises 28 local councils.

“You managed the largest district with distinction. God will continue to be with you,” Ojelabi stated.

As Ajala prepares to hand over leadership in a few days, he expressed confidence in his successor and called for continued unity and progress in Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye.

“I believe the next administration will build on what we have started. May the LCDA continue to grow and flourish,” he prayed.
