Grammy Award-winning artiste Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his humble musical beginnings, revealing that he recorded his very first song at the age of 13 using just a tape recorder, a radio, and beats from popular video games.
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, Burna Boy recounted how his early passion for music led him to experiment with unconventional tools.
According to him, he used soundtracks from games like NBA Street Vol. II and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to create beats for his debut track.
“The first song I ever recorded was by myself,” Burna Boy shared. “I had a tape, a radio, and a recorder. I used the beats from video games like NBA Street and GTA: San Andreas to record over. I think I was around 13 at the time.”
Now 34, the ‘African Giant’ has grown into a global icon and a major influence in the Afrobeats genre. He also addressed a past controversy where he was criticized for saying Afrobeats lacked substance.
