CUPP blasts Gov Okpebholo over threat to Peter Obi

Labour Party Reps condemn alleged threat to Peter Obi, by Edo Governor, Monday Okpebholo, describing it as outrageous, shocking

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has come down hard on Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over his recent threat to former Anambra governor Peter Obi.

CUPP described the governor’s remarks as “disgraceful” and a show of “thuggery” unbecoming of a leader in a democratic society.

In a statement released on Friday, CUPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Peter Ameh, said Okpebholo’s comments exposed his disregard for the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of movement to all citizens.

“Okpebholo’s recorded remarks warning Obi not to ‘dare’ enter Edo State without his permission and claiming his security ‘is not guaranteed’ amount to a veiled death threat against a law-abiding citizen exercising his constitutional rights,” Ameh said.

The Edo governor had earlier told his supporters, “If anything happens to him (Obi) here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”

CUPP, however, warned that such utterances strike at the heart of Nigeria’s democracy.

“Governor Monday Okpebholo’s threat against Peter Obi is a disgraceful act. It is a direct assault on constitutional rights to freedom of movement, expression, and association, and reflects dangerous arrogance that has no place in governance,” Ameh declared.

He urged political leaders, civil society organisations, and the international community to condemn the governor’s conduct, calling it “unacceptable and undemocratic.”

“This incident must serve as a wake-up call for Nigerians to defend their constitutional protections and demand accountability from those in power,” CUPP added.
