‘Not a threat, just protocol’ – Edo Gov Okpebholo explains comment on Peter Obi

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State says his controversial remark about Peter Obi needing “clearance” before visiting the state was all about security protocol, not politics.

The governor came under fire after telling supporters at a defection rally in Uromi that the Labour Party leader must seek government approval before entering Edo.

But in a statement on Sunday, Okpebholo insisted he was only stressing the need for high-profile visitors to notify the state for security reasons.

“As Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is my duty to protect lives and property,” his media aide, Fred Itua, said. “Ignoring security protocols creates serious risks for both the visitor and residents.”

He linked the caution to rising attacks and kidnappings, especially against religious leaders. The governor also advised public figures to avoid flashy donations, citing moral, spiritual, and security concerns.

Quoting the Bible, the statement said:
“Giving should be done in private, as Jesus taught in Matthew 6:2–4… This wisdom cannot be overstated in today’s volatile security environment.”

Okpebholo also took a swipe at critics, warning that the matter should not be twisted for political mileage.

The governor stressed, “We expect all leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with security protocols.”

This comes days after Obi said Nigeria’s students should not suffer for leadership failures, and amid mounting reactions from political circles.
