PFAN has also called on the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the Edo State Government to intervene and provide long-term support for Ikhana’s recovery and post-treatment rehabilitation.
In a heartfelt display of compassion and swift action, billionaire businessman and philanthropist Peter Omoh Dunia has taken full responsibility for the advanced medical care of former Super Eagles coach, Kadiri Ikhana, by moving him to the prestigious Turkish Hospital in Abuja.
Following consultations with Ikhana’s family and close associates on Saturday, July 19, in Auchi, Edo State, Dunia who hails from the same Etsakor region as the legendary coach made immediate arrangements for his medical transfer.
The meeting, which took place at 12:30 p.m., was a turning point in efforts to secure better treatment for the ailing sports icon.
Prompted by a touching article written by Chief Segun Odegbami highlighting Ikhana’s deteriorating health, veteran sports advocate Prince Harrison Jalla reached out to Dunia on the night of July 15. Despite being abroad at the time, Dunia pledged his commitment without hesitation.
By Saturday afternoon, Dunia had contacted management at the Turkish Hospital Abuja, securing a slot for Ikhana’s arrival on Monday, July 21.
After a series of medical evaluations, the coach was formally admitted by 6 p.m. that evening for comprehensive treatment.
Peter Omoh Dunia is a respected patron of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), led by Tijani Babangida (MON), and has long been a benefactor to many within Nigeria’s sporting community.
This development shines a light on the urgent need for both federal and state sports authorities to take more proactive roles in the welfare of Nigeria’s sports heroes past and present. Many believe that no top government official would settle for facilities like Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State as a final medical option.
PFAN has also called on the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the Edo State Government to intervene and provide long-term support for Ikhana’s recovery and post-treatment rehabilitation.
This act of generosity serves as a clarion call: Nigeria must not forget its legends. It is time to match public accolades with tangible support.
