A 36-year-old man, Benson Clement, was arraigned on Wednesday before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing the sum of $1200 (equivalent of N1,829,000) belonging to his friend.

The defendant, a resident of Gbagyi Villa in Kaduna, is facing a one-count charge bordering on stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 18, at Taiwo Road, Kaduna.

He further told the court that the nominal complainant, Nathan Michael, reported the matter at the State Criminal investigation Department.

Leo said the defendant who is a friend to the complainant, came to visit him, and while he was sleeping, the defendant stole the said sum and ran away to an unknown destination.

He said the defendant was later arrested in Abuja and he confessed to have used the money with N250,000 remaining.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

“Section 217 stipulate seven years imprisonment for stealing, if found guilty.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

He also ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payments to the Kaduna State Government.

The Magistrate thereafter adjourned the case until Aug. 28 for hearing.
