Senator Ireti slams Police over Abuja demolition clash
Senator Ireti Kingibe has condemned the Nigeria Police Force after reports emerged that officers allegedly opened fire on residents protesting demolitions in the Karsana area of Abuja.
The lawmaker, angered by the incident, described the shooting as “tragic” and an outright violation of human rights.
“That bullets were fired at civilians, people merely trying to salvage their lives and dignity, is both unacceptable and indefensible. This is not law enforcement; it is state-sponsored trauma,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.
Kingibe blasted the government’s approach to urban development, warning that Abuja must not become a city where the poor live in fear of their government.
“We cannot build a just society by bulldozing communities without compassion or firing at citizens instead of listening to them,” she added.
The senator called for an immediate investigation, justice for victims, and compensation for those affected.
“The government must remember its duty is to protect, not persecute. I will not stay silent while those I represent bleed,” she declared.
