She said the media accreditation portal was opened on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, to allow interested journalists and media outlets to register for election coverage. The bye-elections are scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the low number of media organisations applying to cover the upcoming bye-elections scheduled to hold across the country in August

Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, said in a statement that only 12 media organisations have applied so far, with a total of 91 personnel.

She said the media accreditation portal was opened on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, to allow interested journalists and media outlets to register for election coverage. The bye-elections are scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

“As of 3:00 pm on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, only 12 applications have been received,” she said. “This is much lower than expected.”

INEC is encouraging print, broadcast, and online media organisations to take advantage of the remaining time to apply for accreditation. The portal will close at midnight on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.

The commission stressed the importance of media in promoting transparency and public confidence in the election process. INEC urged the media to report fairly and professionally.

“Together, we can help build trust in the electoral process through responsible and timely reporting,” she said.
