Indian Football Federation rejects Xavi as national team coach, reveals reason
Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez made headlines after applying to become the head coach of the Indian national football team, but his bid has been rejected by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
AIFF’s technical committee confirmed the Spanish icon was among the high-profile applicants for the role.
However, Xavi’s name did not make the final shortlist.
The reason was because his financial demands were deemed too high for the federation’s budget. While AIFF did not disclose the exact figures, sources revealed that the former Barcelona manager’s salary expectations far exceeded what the organisation could accommodate.
Xavi, a World Cup winner with Spain and one of football’s greatest midfielders, recently ended his tenure as Barcelona’s head coach. His interest in managing India generated a buzz among fans, with many imagining what his tactical genius could bring to the Blue Tigers.
Meanwhile, the AIFF is expected to make an official announcement soon regarding the shortlisted candidates.
