Nigerian singer Terry G, real name Gabriel Oche Amanyi, has spoken out against the backlash he received for performing at political events, insisting that it does not mean he supports any political party.
The controversial artiste made the statement during a recent appearance on The Real Shareholders podcast, where he explained that performing at political gatherings is simply part of his job as a musician.
“As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you’re opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you’re lucky. So, respect to the party,” he said.
Terry G emphasized that his performances do not equate to political endorsements.
“I’m just doing my job. I’m an independent artist. If I had said people should vote for APC, that’s a different thing. But I only went there to perform.”
The singer, who came under fire for performing at President Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration concert in May 2023 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, added that fans are unfairly judging him based on appearances.
“They are now judging me based on what I did, not what I said. No, you don’t need to judge me for that.”
Terry G also alleged in November 2023 that he was shortchanged by the APC, claiming that his payment for the performance was hijacked by unnamed individuals.
