A tragic incident has rocked Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), as a female student was found dead in her off-campus room over the weekend. Joy Adeyemi, a student of the Department of Human Kinetics, was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend.
According to reports, Joy was last seen on Tuesday, after which she went missing. Her decomposing body was discovered by neighbors who noticed a foul smell emanating from her room.
Sources say her boyfriend reportedly killed her and fled the town with money she used for her POS (Point of Sale) business.
A fellow student, who identified himself simply as Kunle, revealed, “Her boyfriend killed her on Tuesday and locked her body inside the room. It was the neighbors who raised the alarm when they perceived a bad odor. We don’t yet know why he did it.”
This heartbreaking incident follows another case at AAUA where two students, Andrel Okah and John Abba, were abducted and allegedly killed by their landlord and accomplices.
While some suspects have been arrested, the landlord and alleged mastermind, Tallex, reportedly died in police custody.
The death of Joy has sparked outrage among students, who took to the streets on Saturday to protest the killings. Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “Stop Killing Us” and “Say No to Students Killing at Akungba Akoko,” demanding urgent government intervention.
In a joint statement, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the killings, urging the Ondo State Government and security agencies to take swift action.
Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that three suspects connected to Joy’s death have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing boyfriend.
Meanwhile, AAUA’s Head of Media and Protocols, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, called on students to remain calm and allow security agencies to conduct thorough investigations.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about the safety of students in Akungba-Akoko, with calls for enhanced security measures on and around campus.
