The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has launched an investigation following a viral video in which several Nigerians claim they were recruited as miners by a Chinese company and later abandoned in the Central African Republic (CAR).
In a statement released on Saturday, the Embassy expressed deep concern over the incident and affirmed its commitment to uncovering the facts. It stated that the Chinese government places a high priority on the lawful conduct of its enterprises abroad.
“The Chinese government consistently mandates that all Chinese enterprises and citizens operating abroad strictly comply with local laws and regulations, ensuring that all business operations fully adhere to local legal frameworks,” the statement read.
The Embassy urged that the issue be handled appropriately and emphasized the need for strong collaboration with Nigerian authorities during the investigation.
It further stated that companies involved would be encouraged to address the situation responsibly, and stressed the importance of protecting the legal rights and welfare of citizens from both nations.
“The Chinese side will urge the involved companies to address this matter appropriately, maintain close communication with Nigerian authorities throughout the investigation, and work together to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of citizens of both nations,” the Embassy added.
