US singer Ciara becomes Beninese citizen, says “Je suis béninoise”
American singer, Ciara, has been granted citizenship by the Republic of Benin.
The Grammy-winning star shared the news on Monday, July 28, through her Instagram page.
She revealed that the ceremony took place on Friday, July 26, which coincided with the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.
Ciara said she traced her ancestral roots to Benin and was honoured to become the first person to receive citizenship under the country’s new nationality initiative.
She was received by President Patrice Talon and other top government officials.
“Je suis béninoise,” Ciara declared in one of the videos from her visit.
The singer also thanked the people of Benin for what she described as a heartfelt welcome.
“Thank you Benin for opening your arms and your heart to me. See you soon,” she wrote.
Her visit and new status have sparked conversations online about reconnection, roots, and identity.
