Manchester City set to complete high-profile transfer in record-breaking move
Manchester City are set to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley in a deal that could break the British transfer record for a goalkeeper.
The 22-year-old, who came through City’s academy, left for Burnley two years ago in a £14million move. Now, with Newcastle United showing serious interest, City have exercised their matching rights to bring him back to the Etihad.
Although City still have Ederson and Stefan Ortega on their roster, Trafford is expected to challenge for the first spot as Ederson enters the final year of his contract.
Last season, Trafford played a key role in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League, conceding only 16 goals and keeping 30 clean sheets, a figure that equalled a 71-year-old EFL record. His impressive form earned him a call-up to England’s senior squad by manager Thomas Tuchel.
With performance-related add-ons included, the total package for Trafford’s return could exceed £30million, surpassing the British goalkeeper transfer record set when Jordan Pickford moved to Everton.
An official announcement is expected soon.
