Observers believe this initiative could inspire other political parties to adopt similar measures in order to promote fairness, inclusiveness, and broader participation in Nigeria’s democracy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a bold step toward inclusive governance by announcing that 35% of its leadership positions will now be reserved for women.

This move is part of the party’s efforts to create a more balanced and diverse leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made by the Interim National Chairman of the party, David Mark, during the official inauguration of the ADC’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Tuesday.

David Mark, a former Senate President, emphasized the party’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering young people across Nigeria.

He stated that the ADC is not only giving more leadership opportunities to women but is also creating room for young Nigerians under the age of 40 to take up key roles within the party.

According to him, the future of Nigeria depends on the active involvement of both women and the youth in politics and decision-making processes.

David Mark said:

“We will open the gates for the next generation. Our policies, nominations, and leadership roles will reflect meaningful inclusion of youths and women not just token representation or symbolic gestures. We want real participation, real leadership.”

He added that the party’s doors are wide open to young people across the country who are passionate about creating positive change in their communities and the nation at large.

“This is why we have reserved 35% of our leadership positions for women. It is also our strong commitment to ensure that young people below the age of 40 are included in key leadership positions across all levels of the party,” he said.

The ADC’s decision comes at a time when many Nigerians have been calling for greater youth and female representation in political leadership.

The party’s new policy is seen as a strategic move to attract fresh ideas and new energy, as well as to challenge the traditional dominance of older politicians in the country’s political space.

Observers believe this initiative could inspire other political parties to adopt similar measures in order to promote fairness, inclusiveness, and broader participation in Nigeria’s democracy.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the ADC says it is determined to present itself as a party of progress and inclusivity one that truly represents the hopes and aspirations of a modern, forward-thinking Nigeria.
