Despite speculation that she might throw her hat into the ring, former US Vice President Kamala Harris has decided not to run for California governor in 2026.
Harris had been considered a potential front-runner due to her statewide name recognition and experience winning elections. But now she has made it clear that is not the path she has chosen for herself.
She made this clear in a statement released by her office on Wednesday.
“Over the past six months, I have spent time reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history and the best way for me to continue fighting for the American people and advancing the values and ideals I hold dear.
“I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor. I love this state, its people and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” Harris said.
With the announcement, it is believed that Harris has not ruled out running for president in 2028. She’s been known to hold the view that the current state of politics and government has often failed the public.
Harris is also believed to be considering alternative paths, including starting a nonprofit to engage younger voters.
US President Donald Trump in his reaction, thinks he should run if she wants to. Trump believes Harris needs to engage more with the media, citing his own successful approach to media engagement during his presidential campaigns.
