Soludo: Any politician promising single term needs psychiatric evaluation
Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has blasted politicians who promise to serve only one term in office, describing such individuals as mentally unstable.
Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, made the remarks on Saturday, during a political rally held in Anambra South as he intensified his campaign for a second term in office.
Speaking to party supporters, the governor questioned the rationale behind a single-term pledge, insisting that the Nigerian Constitution clearly provides for two terms.
“How can anybody with a functioning brain say that? Do you think you’re speaking to fools?” Soludo asked.
He added, “You come to people and say you will do only one term. Any politician who says that must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem.”
Soludo’s remarks appear to be a veiled attack on politicians like Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who have both publicly supported the idea of a single-term presidency.
Recall that Makinde had recently advocated for a six-year single tenure for elected public office holders, while Obi, during an interview on Channels TV, said he was willing to do only one term in the spirit of equity and zoning.
“I don’t need a day more than four years,” Obi had said. “If they can impact negatively on us for just two years, why won’t someone achieve a lot in four years?”
Soludo, however, dismissed such talk as unrealistic and misleading.
