“Why I repeated all my father’s mistakes” – Clarence Peters

Clarence Peters

Quick Read

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Peters shared how the realization helped him find healing and forgiveness without ever needing to confront his father directly.

Renowned music video director Clarence Peters has revealed deeply personal reflections on his life and career, admitting that he repeated many of the same mistakes his legendary father, Sir Shina Peters, made.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Peters shared how the realization helped him find healing and forgiveness without ever needing to confront his father directly.

“I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own,” he said. “The moment I realised that, I forgave him instantly—even before we had a conversation. That was 2014/15. That was when I began my journey into adulthood.”

Clarence, son of Afro-juju pioneer Shina Peters and veteran actress Clarion Chukwura, has previously spoken about the challenges of growing up under the shadow of fame. He has cited his parents’ turbulent relationship and public lives as having a profound impact on his personal development and choices.

In past interviews, Clarence also shared how his mother once considered aborting him, believing he was the reincarnation of her late father—a belief that changed her mind.

Now a highly respected filmmaker, Peters says his journey toward adulthood and self-awareness is ongoing. “You’re always on the journey,” he noted.
