These meetings, the government said involved the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, resulted in a mutual agreement to avoid actions that could disrupt LASU’s academic and operational stability while the government evaluates the unions’ requests.

The Lagos State Government has called on the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) to suspend their ongoing indefinite strike and resume dialogue to address their welfare demands.

The JAC comprises ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU.

The appeal, issued through the Ministry of Tertiary Education on August 3, 2025, emphasised the government’s commitment to restoring academic and industrial peace at the university.

In a statement by Mamud Hassan, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Tertiary Education, the government acknowledged receiving formal correspondence from the unions and has engaged in high-level discussions with their representatives.

These meetings, the government said involved the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, resulted in a mutual agreement to avoid actions that could disrupt LASU’s academic and operational stability while the government evaluates the unions’ requests.

Agoro reiterated the administration’s dedication to the welfare of all state civil servants, including LASU’s academic and non-academic staff, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership.

He assured the unions that the government is actively seeking sustainable solutions and remains open to continued dialogue.

“The door remains open for constructive engagement to resolve these issues amicably,” Agoro stated, as quoted in the release.

The ongoing strike has halted academic and administrative activities at LASU, threatening the academic calendar and the future of its students.

The government highlighted that such disruptions undermine the university’s core mission of educating students, urging union leaders to reconsider their industrial action.

Hon. Tolani Sule, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, appealed for peace and cooperation, acknowledging the government’s efforts to fund LASU despite the fiscal challenges of managing Lagos as a mega city.

“With strong collaboration, understanding, and trust, we can work together to find a lasting solution that benefits everyone,” Sule said.

The Lagos State Government reassured parents, students, and staff of its commitment to resolving the impasse swiftly through dialogue, emphasizing that constructive engagement, rather than operational disruptions, is the path to a resolution that serves all stakeholders.
