Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons centre-back Tosin Demehin with a cash gift of ₦30 million and a new house at the prestigious Sunshine Estate in Oba-Ile, Akure.
This is in recognition of her performance at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria clinched the title.
The gesture was announced on Monday during a civic reception held in Akure for the Ondo-born contributors to Nigeria’s WAFCON success.
Aiyedatiwa also extended ₦15 million each to two other indigenes of the state-Mary Akinsola, media officer of the team, and Mary Oduboku, the team secretary, acknowledging their crucial support roles during the tournament in Morocco.
“This is a landmark achievement not just for Nigeria, but for Ondo State,” the Governor declared.
“Tosin Demehin exemplified excellence and brought pride to our state. We are giving her ₦30 million and a home as a symbol of our appreciation.”
Hailing from Ilaje Local Government Area, Demehin was pivotal in Nigeria’s rock-solid defence throughout the tournament.
The Governor praised her as a model of commitment and discipline, encouraging young athletes to emulate her determination.
Aiyedatiwa didn’t stop there. He expressed appreciation for Akinsola and Oduboku, both hailing from the state’s southern senatorial zone, stating that their contributions behind the scenes were just as vital to the Super Falcons’ triumphant campaign.
He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to youth and sports development, pledging continued investment in athletes and improved support for Sunshine Stars FC to aid their return to the top tier of Nigerian football.
The Governor also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commendation of the Super Falcons, calling such national gestures vital in boosting athletes’ morale.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Segun, assured that the state’s sporting profile would continue to rise with the current government’s support.
Ondo FA Chairman, Dele Sunday Ajayi, praised Aiyedatiwa for becoming the first state governor to reward the Super Falcons contingent from his state, calling it a bold incentive for young talents.
Demehin, visibly emotional during her response, thanked the people of Ondo State and the Governor for the rare honour. She also called for greater attention to women’s football.
“As someone who started with Sunshine Queens, this is a full-circle moment,” she said.
“This recognition means everything to me and to young girls dreaming of a career in football. I hope this inspires many more.”
