He called for a system where every Nigerian can run for office and be judged on their ideas, experience, and leadership qualities.

Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2019 and 2023, has spoken out against the idea of rotating the presidency among Nigeria’s regions.

He believes the most qualified person should lead the country, no matter where they are from.

In an interview on Channels Television, Sowore said the focus should be on a candidate’s ability and plans, not their place of origin.

“If I have a good president who can run the country well, I don’t care where he comes from,” he said.

Sowore, also a human rights activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, argued that zoning can prevent capable people from running simply because of their region or ethnicity.

Sowore warned that zoning could bring unqualified leaders to power.

“Giving the presidency to someone just because of where they’re from—especially if they’re not competent—won’t help Nigeria.”

He called for a system where every Nigerian can run for office and be judged on their ideas, experience, and leadership qualities.

“Let everyone come out, show their plans, speak to the people, and let voters decide based on character and vision,” he said.

Sowore has long been a strong voice for change in Nigeria and often criticizes both the ruling and opposition parties on
