The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed viral claims that over 30 female students of the Federal University, Lafia were raped during a recent bandit attack.

Reacting on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, described the report as false and misleading, insisting that there is no evidence to support the allegation.

“That report is false. Bandits entered into the school and raped over 30 female students? Our findings show that the report is not true,” Nansel said.

He explained that police officers reached out to the university’s Chief Security Officer, the school’s information officer, and several students, but none could confirm the incident.

“We got across to the Chief Security Officer and the school’s information officer — they both denied any report of rape. We also spoke with some students, and they said nothing like that happened. If it did, the students would have raised their voices,” he added.

Nansel, however, confirmed that there was a robbery incident on July 27 in the Student Village area, where some students were attacked.

“Yes, on July 27, there was a robbery in the student village. A phone, power bank, and a handbag belonging to a student named Jennifer were stolen. One male student was also injured while trying to escape. But there was no report of rape,” Nansel said.

He condemned the mass rape claims as an attempt to spread panic and misinformation.

“Over 30 female students raped? Haba! If that truly happened, why would anyone want to hide it? And let’s be clear the police are not the cause,” he said bluntly.

The police urged the public to verify sensitive information before spreading it, especially when it concerns the safety of citizens.
