Why Nigerians should not trust Obi’s single-term promise – Labour Party chieftain

Peter Obi and Labour Party

A top Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, has come out swinging against Peter Obi, calling his one-term promise a “political scam” Nigerians must not believe.

Obi, who recently renewed his promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, had tweeted on Sunday:

“My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment… My word is my bond.”

But Arabambi isn’t buying it, not even for a second.

“We are not going to trust him,” he said during an interview on Tuesday.

“This is the same man who said he would never leave APGA, and what did he do? He left.”

Arabambi, who’s the factional national publicity secretary of the Labour Party, tore into Obi’s political past, accusing him of jumping ship when it suits him and using sweet words to deceive the public.

According to him, Obi’s massive popularity during the 2023 elections had nothing to do with political structure or ideology, rather, it was simply Nigerian youths rejecting bad governance under Buhari and the PDP.

“Obi didn’t build this party. The Labour Party made Peter Obi not the other way around,” Arabambi said.

“No kobo of Peter Obi entered the party.”

He doubled down, accusing the former LP presidential candidate of offering no financial support to the party, yet reaping the rewards of its national structure and loyal supporters.

The one-term promise, Arabambi insists, is just another tactic to win hearts in 2027 — but Nigerians, he warns, should not be fooled twice.

“You said APGA was your home. You left. Now you’re saying one term why should we believe you now?”

With tensions still simmering within the Labour Party and fresh presidential ambitions already in the air, one thing is clear: Peter Obi’s road to 2027 won’t be smooth.
