Renowned Nigerian author and global literary icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has voiced her continued support for Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stating that his ambition stems from a genuine desire to serve — not personal gain.
Speaking during a televised interview on Channels TV, Adichie distinguished Obi from the traditional political class, saying:
“He doesn’t need to be president; he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. That is a very important distinction.”
She described Obi as humble, consistent, and driven by values, traits she says have not changed over the 15 years she’s known him.
“Peter Obi is not the kind of person who expects gratitude for doing his job. He sees public service as a duty — not a favour,” she emphasized.
The award-winning writer also criticized the desperation often seen in Nigerian politics, pointing out that many seek office solely to satisfy their egos.
Reflecting on her public support during the 2023 elections, Adichie said her alignment with Obi was “rooted in my love for this country,” and reinforced her belief that Nigeria can still progress with the right leadership.
When asked if Obi would run again in 2027, Adichie declined to comment. However, she reaffirmed her admiration for his values, saying:
“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same today. Genuine, curious, consistent. That’s rare.”
Adichie previously made headlines for writing a powerful open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, questioning the legitimacy of Nigeria’s 2023 elections after Obi lost to President Bola Tinubu.
She also made appearances at the election tribunal in solidarity with Obi.
