Emma Ugolee exposes shocking truth about Nollywood casting

In a viral Instagram post, Ugolee criticized producers and casting directors for selecting actors based on follower counts instead of professional merit.
Veteran media personality Emma Ugolee has taken a bold stand against what he calls Nollywood’s “sickening” shift toward valuing social media popularity over actual acting talent.
In a viral Instagram post, Ugolee criticized producers and casting directors for selecting actors based on follower counts instead of professional merit.
He referenced the hit series To Kill a Monkey, noting that its lead actors have under 400,000 followers combined, yet deliver outstanding performances.
He contrasted this with social media influencers like Egungun, known for viral street interviews and provocative content, who boasts over 2 million followers.
“This is unfair to real actors,” Ugolee wrote. “Some just want to act, not chase clout.”
Ugolee’s passionate post sheds light on an unwritten rule in Nollywood: a large following equals better casting opportunities.
He pointed out that actors are now pressured to trade privacy and professionalism for online drama, nudity, and clickbait antics to remain competitive.
“They’re expected to be beef-prone, controversial, and constantly entertaining—even off-screen,” he added.
