The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that 21 states in Nigeria are at high risk of flooding between Wednesday and Thursday this week.

According to NiMet’s latest weather forecast, these states will likely experience heavy and continuous rainfall. The agency said the combination of already soaked soil and rising river levels could cause serious flooding, especially in low-lying areas and communities close to rivers and streams.

States at Risk:
Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, FCT, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, southern Borno, Kano, and Katsina.

NiMet explained:

“The current weather conditions support heavy and prolonged rainfall. When this happens in areas where the soil is already wet and river levels are high, the chance of flooding becomes very high.”

Flood Impact So Far:
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that flooding this year has already affected many Nigerians:

  • 191 people have died
  • 94 people are still missing
  • 239 people were injured
  • 134,435 people have been affected in total
  • 48,056 people were forced to leave their homes
  • 9,499 houses and 9,450 farmlands have been damaged

NEMA said these incidents were recorded in 47 Local Government Areas across 20 states, including: Abia, FCT, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto.
