Afrobeat star Sean Dampte has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Fuji music legend King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1) and ValueJet, cautioning that celebrity status should never excuse breaking the rules.
The dispute erupted at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where K1 was accused of attempting to board a ValueJet flight with alcohol, ignoring security warnings.
Reports indicate that the drink spilled on an aviation officer, causing delays that ultimately grounded the flight.
The fallout has been swift: K1 faces a six-month no-fly ban, possible prosecution, and an investigation into the pilots on duty.
Reacting via Instagram, Dampte reminded fans and fellow entertainers of the responsibility that comes with fame:
“Power and life are transient. Our actions, especially in the public eye, leave a lasting impact. If this were an ordinary Nigerian boarding with alcohol and causing a scene, there would be no debate. The law applies to everyone. Fame doesn’t grant immunity.”
He went on to urge Nigerians to distinguish between artistic creativity and irresponsible behavior, praising K1’s contributions to Nigerian music while insisting that icons must also be held accountable.
“We celebrate legends who have elevated our culture globally, but we cannot justify nonsense in the name of admiration. This is a moment for us to learn and grow as a society,” he added.
