Lagos court remands 7 men for belonging to Eiye, Aiye confraternities

An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday remanded seven alleged members of Eiye and Aiye confraternity after they were arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on belonging to an unlawful society and assault.
The defendants were identified as Adeshina Adenekan, Akiniyi Oluwole, Jamiu Balogun, John Monday, Adedeji Ayodeji, Abubakar Olayemi and Saheed Jimoh
Adenekan, 33, Oluwole, 37, Balogun, 33, Monday, 27, Ayodeji, 36, Olayemi, 37, and Jimoh, 44 according to the prosecutor, Insp Adegeshin Famuyiwa committed the offences, along with others still at large, on July 17 at about 5.00 p.m. at Agbalumo Igbe area of Ikorodu.
Famuyiwa said the defendants unlawfully belonged to secret societies known as the Eiye and Aiye confraternity.
She said the defendants also assaulted Adenekan, using a cutlass and stones to inflict grievous injuries on his head and other parts of his body.
The prosecutor added that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to breach the peace by smoking substances suspected to be hemp in a public place.
He said the offences contravened Section 40 (a)(b)(d)(e) of the unlawful Society and Cultist Law of Lagos State and Sections 411, 245 and 168(d)(h) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mr A. O. Ogbe, who did not take the defendants’ pleas, ordered that they be remanded in a correctional centre and that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Ogbe adjourned the case until Sept. 11 for mention.
