“We remain confident in Tambuwal’s integrity. No politically driven investigation can shake our belief in his leadership,” the statement concluded.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has strongly criticised the arrest of former governor and current senator, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling it a politically motivated attempt to suppress opposition voices.

Tambuwal, who led Sokoto State for eight years and previously held the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, was detained by the EFCC on Monday over allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office.

In a statement released early Tuesday and signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, the Sokoto PDP claimed the arrest is part of a broader effort by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to stifle dissent and undermine growing resistance to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The so-called investigation is nothing but a fishing expedition, resurrected from an old, baseless case that has repeatedly failed to yield any credible evidence,” the statement read.

The party alleged that political forces in both Sokoto and Abuja are behind the move, aiming to tarnish Tambuwal’s reputation and pressure him into retreating from his criticism of the current administration.

According to the PDP, Tambuwal’s tenure was characterized by financial prudence and transparency. They accused the EFCC of engaging in selective prosecution, turning a blind eye to serious corruption allegations involving members of the ruling party.

The party called on Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies to uphold fairness and impartiality in their operations, urging citizens and party supporters in Sokoto to stay calm and continue advocating for true democracy and accountable governance.

“We remain confident in Tambuwal’s integrity. No politically driven investigation can shake our belief in his leadership,” the statement concluded.
