Father of murdered Kogi journalist is dead
James Aiyepeku, father of 26-year-old journalist Ayo Aiyepeku, who was murdered in Lokoja, Kogi State, has passed away just days after collapsing, family sources confirmed to TVC News on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
Ayo, an indigene of Ekinrin Adde in Ijumu Local Government Area, was allegedly lured and killed by a correctional service officer, Adebayo Pelumi. The suspect reportedly fled the scene with the victim’s body, sparking a police manhunt.
The suspect’s body was later found in a hotel in Lokoja, with a bottle containing a poisonous substance and a handwritten note at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest it was suicide.
Ayo’s body was recovered days later in a bush on the outskirts of the Crusher axis in Lokoja. His remains were deposited at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, as security operatives continue their investigation.
Before his death, James Aiyepeku had called for justice for his son, expressing deep grief and demanding that the perpetrators be held accountable.
The family and the community have expressed shock at the passing of the grieving father, adding to the tragic circumstances surrounding the murder of the young journalist.
