Newly sworn-in Lagos councillor dies two weeks after taking oath

Lagos councillor

Oluwakemi Rufai, the newly sworn-in councillor representing Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, has died barely two weeks after taking her oath of office.

Rufai, the only female member of the legislative council, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following a brief illness.

The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Sesan Olowa, and Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rasaki Kasali, confirmed her death, describing it as a “rude shock” to the council and the community.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its spokesman Seye Oladejo, mourned her passing, describing Rufai as a “rising star” who demonstrated commitment to grassroots service and gender inclusion.

“Her short time in office reflected her dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s ideals,” Oladejo said. He extended condolences to her family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents, adding that “her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten.”
