The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has explained that the Federal Government decided to create the Federal University of Environment and Technology in order to address serious environmental issues affecting Nigeria and the world.
He made this statement in Abuja during the inauguration of the university’s governing council and key officers.
The new university, located in Koroma, Rivers State, is the first in Nigeria to focus specifically on environmental sciences.
It was approved by President Bola Tinubu in February 2025. Dr. Alausa emphasized that the creation of the university is not just about expanding Nigeria’s higher education system, but about providing research-based solutions to environmental problems.
According to the minister, the institution is expected to become a center for excellence in environmental studies, renewable energy, climate change response, disaster management, and sustainable technology.
He said the university should develop solutions that address both the specific needs of Nigeria and broader global challenges.
He noted that choosing Koroma in Rivers State was a deliberate decision because of the area’s close connection to natural resources and environmental concerns.
Dr. Alausa urged members of the university’s governing council to lead with vision, transparency, and responsibility. He reminded them to follow proper procedures, uphold merit, and protect the university’s independence according to the law.
He added that the establishment of the university is part of the government’s effort to increase access to quality education, especially in areas that support both national progress and global development, such as environmental protection and technology.
The minister warned against making decisions based on politics or personal gain and said the success of the university would depend on the character and wisdom of its leadership. He congratulated the new Vice-Chancellor and other officials, stating that their work will set the foundation for the university’s future.
He encouraged them to have a clear vision, pursue academic excellence, follow global best practices, support staff development, enhance student life, and form strategic partnerships. He also asked them to work closely with the local community and relevant government agencies to create a peaceful and productive environment.
According to him, their efforts will not only shape the future of the university but also contribute to the sustainable growth of the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.
