The Lagos State Government has announced a three-day partial closure of the Maryland Independence Bridge for emergency night repairs, urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the repairs would focus on “the damaged section of the wall of the Maryland Independence Bridge” and would run from Saturday, 16th August to Tuesday, 19th August, 2025, between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. daily.

“Motorists inbound Oshodi/Ojuelegba/Stadium/Lagos will be diverted at Maria Lodge in Maryland into the Maryland Bridge to connect Idiroko inwards Anthony to continue their journeys,” Osiyemi explained.

“This diversion is necessary because the main carriageway will not be opened to vehicular movement during the repair hours,” he said.

He, however, assured that traffic from the opposite direction would not be affected.

“Motorists inbound Ketu/Ikorodu from Lagos/Stadium/Anthony will have unhindered vehicular movement,” he stated.

To reduce congestion and ease movement, the Commissioner disclosed that traffic personnel would be deployed to the area.

“Traffic management officers will be on ground to minimise inconvenience and manage vehicular flow. We urge motorists to comply with the directives of the officers to ensure a smooth passage,” Osiyemi said.

He appealed to road users to exercise patience, noting that the partial closure formed part of a broader rehabilitation plan.

“This is part of the traffic management plan for the rehabilitation and replacement works on the expansion joints of Maryland Independence Bridge,” Osiyemi stressed.

The Commissioner reminded residents that the measure was a necessary step toward preserving the safety and structural integrity of the bridge.
