The United States has announced visa restrictions on select African, Cuban, and Grenadan government officials along with their family members over alleged involvement in Cuba’s controversial “medical mission” programme.

According to the U.S. State Department, the scheme sees Cuban medical professionals sent abroad and effectively “rented” to other nations at high fees, with the Cuban regime retaining most of the earnings.

Washington says this not only enriches a corrupt government but also deprives Cuban citizens of vital healthcare services.

The U.S. urged participating countries to pay the doctors directly, bypassing what it described as the regime’s “slave masters,” and vowed continued action to end such coercive labour practices.

Reaffirming its support for the Cuban people’s “freedom and dignity,” the US called on all democracies to unite in confronting Havana’s human rights abuses.
