Plan your movement: Lagos closes popular Lagos–Ibadan Bridge for 44 days

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has issued a detailed traffic advisory as the second phase of maintenance work on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area is set to commence.

This follows the successful completion and reopening of the bridge’s first repair phase.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the upcoming repairs will focus on the expansion joints on the bridge inbound to Lagos Island.

He stated, “The repair of the expansion joints is scheduled to run from Tuesday, 19th August 2025, to Wednesday, 1st October 2025. The maintenance works will be executed in phases to minimise disruption to vehicular movement along this critical corridor.”

To ensure smooth commuting, the Ministry has mapped out alternative routes. For motorists inbound from Lagos–Ibadan Expressway/Lagos Toll Gate heading to Oshodi or Victoria Island, “vehicles will be diverted to one lane of the three-lane road approximately 50 metres before the work area and will regain full access 50 metres after the work zone,” Mr. Osiyemi explained.

He further advised, “Motorists heading to Oshodi can alternatively use the Ojota Slip Road to link Ikorodu Road inwards Anthony (by Taxi Park), while those heading to Victoria Island may use the same slip road through Ikorodu Road inwards Anthony (by Town Planning Way) to connect Gbagada and access the Third Mainland Bridge inbound to Lagos Island. Motorists can also continue on Ikorodu Road inwards Funsho Williams Avenue to use Eko Bridge to complete their journeys.”

For commuters from Ikeja and surrounding areas, Mr. Osiyemi noted, “Motorists are advised to use Maryland to link Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue and then take Eko Bridge to access Outer Marina. They may also connect via Anthony (by Taxi Park) from Ikorodu Road to get to Oshodi and continue their journeys.”

The Commissioner reassured residents that “Traffic Management Officers will be present along the affected corridor to minimise inconvenience and improve traffic flow.”

He urged motorists to cooperate with all traffic interventions, emphasising, “Motorists are implored to be patient, as the partial bridge closure is part of the traffic management plan for the maintenance works.”

This advisory, released by the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure – Office of Infrastructure, underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading critical transport infrastructure while mitigating disruptions to daily commuting.
