The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to media practitioners and social media users against spreading false or misleading information.
The police made this known during the ongoing by-elections in Anambra State and few other states in the country.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Godwin Eze, who is overseeing the elections, gave this caution in Nnewi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, while monitoring the electoral process.
Eze urged the public especially journalists and social media influencers to ensure information is verified through credible sources before publication.
He specifically warned against sharing outdated videos or making provocative statements that could threaten the peace and integrity of the elections.
He called on voters to remain peaceful, comply with security personnel, and avoid any actions that could compromise the credibility of the electoral process.
According to Eze, the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully committed to ensuring a secure, transparent, and fair election. He warned that individuals involved in spreading misinformation or inciting unrest will face the full consequences of the law.
The AIG expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of voters so far, noting that no major security issues had been recorded in areas like Aguata, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ihiala, and Nnewi.
He added that police officers were stationed in affected polling units across Onitsha and expressed confidence in a smooth, hitch-free election.
