Dispute erupts over Awujale stool as Adeyemi ruling house faults exclusion

Quick Read

This ruling house is one of the groups that produce candidates for the stool of Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The Adeyemi ruling house of the Anikilaya dynasty has expressed their unhappiness about being excluded from the Anikilaya ruling house.

This ruling house is one of the groups that produce candidates for the stool of Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The Anikilaya ruling house produced the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away last month.

In a statement signed by Adedeji Ademola Adeyemi and shared with journalists, the family said some members of the Anikilaya ruling house changed history by removing the Adeyemi name from the family tree.

Adeyemi explained that Adeyemi Anikilaya was the eldest crown prince of the late Oba Anikilaya Saagun, while Ogbagba and Ademolu were his two other sons.

He also said, “Prince Ademola Aiyegbajeje Adeyemi was chosen for the Awujale stool after the death of Oba Daniel Adesanya (Gbelegbuwa II) in 1959, but he turned down the offer.

“His younger brother, Prince Mubashiru Adedipupo Adeyemi, who was the father of the late Oba SK Adetona, put forward his son, Sikiru Kayode Adetona from the Adeyemi Anikilaya family. He was accepted by the kingmakers and became Awujale in 1960.”

The Adeyemi family said they rejected claims from some people who did not want to recognize them as the eldest branch.

Instead, these people wrongly gave leadership to the second-born son and added two others who were not part of the family to the royal lineage.

Adeyemi said, “To be clear, the Adeyemi ruling house rejects the inclusion of Mabadeje, Adekoya Ofirigidi, and Adeire Adeewu, who are said to be children of the late Oba Anikilaya Saagun Figbajoye, who ruled in 1821, but are not known to us.

“We, the Adeyemi ruling house, confirm that we are descendants of Adeyemi Anikilaya, the eldest son of the late Oba Anikilaya Saagun Figbajoye, who was Awujale of Ijebu Ode until 1821.”

The family asks everyone to ignore the false claims made by a few misguided members of the family in the media
