“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, will continue to enforce traffic laws and intensify public awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies,” he stated.
A fatal road traffic accident occurred in the early hours of Monday at the Volkswagen inward Mile 2 corridor, involving a Toyota Highlander Jeep (APP 150 EY) and a commercial T4 bus (KJA 328 XH), prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Preliminary reports indicate that the Highlander Jeep, travelling at high speed, lost control and violently rammed into the commercial bus, which was illegally parked along the roadside while picking up passengers. The driver of the Highlander died instantly at the scene.
LASTMA officials arrived promptly to secure the accident site, retrieve the body from the wreckage, and hand it over to officers of the Ojo Police Division. The deceased was later transported to the C-Niger Mortuary in Abule Ado for preservation.
In coordination with the police, LASTMA worked swiftly to clear the accidented vehicles and restore the heavy traffic disruption caused by the crash. The damaged vehicles were towed to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family, urging them to find strength in the face of the loss.
He condemned the rising trend of reckless driving and indiscriminate roadside pickups by commercial buses, warning operators to use only government-approved bus stops to ensure passenger and road-user safety.
Bakare-Oki also cautioned motorists against speeding, stressing the importance of vehicle maintenance—particularly braking systems—before embarking on journeys.
“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, will continue to enforce traffic laws and intensify public awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies,” he stated.
