Final tribute to Peter Rufai: Biography unveiling and funeral scheduled

The family of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has announced the plans for his funeral. There will be a service of songs and the public unveiling of his biography on Thursday, August 21st.

The funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 22nd, at the Catholic Church of Visitation in Festac Town, Lagos. His burial will follow at Ikoyi Cemetery.

Peter Rufai, also known as “Dodo Mayana,” passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Lagos after a short illness. He was 61 years old.

Rufai was Nigeria’s goalkeeper at two FIFA World Cups in 1994 (USA) and 1998 (France). He played a key role in Nigeria’s win at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and earned over 60 caps for the national team.

After retiring from football, Rufai focused on helping young players through his organization, Staruf Sports Development Limited. His impact on Nigerian football, both on and off the field, is greatly respected.
