Widespread outrage has erupted following the assault and public humiliation of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State by alleged security operatives.
The disturbing incident, which occurred in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, was captured in a viral video that shows the corps member, identified as Jennifer Edema Elohor, being stripped and flogged by men wielding guns and dressed in security uniforms.
Witnesses reported that the operatives stormed a lodge where corps members reside, accusing them of being involved in internet fraud activities, commonly referred to as “yahoo yahoo.” Several corps members were reportedly assaulted during the raid, including Elohor.
Reacting to the video, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed deep disappointment and condemnation. In a statement titled “A Cry for Justice Against Barbarism in Anambra,” Obi described the incident as a shameful and heartbreaking reflection of society. He stated that no civilized society should tolerate such brutality, especially against women. Obi said the victim could have been anyone’s daughter or sister and called for swift justice.
The Anambra State Government confirmed that the officers involved in the act have been arrested and are currently under investigation. Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, described the act as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He explained that the assault happened during a joint security operation, codenamed Operation Udo Ga Achi, which involved the police, army, DSS, Civil Defence, and the state’s local security unit, Agbunechemba. According to him, the operatives were pursuing suspected cultists who ran into a compound. During their search, the altercation with the corps members occurred.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Professor Joy Ezeilo, condemned the act and called for accountability. She questioned why those entrusted with public protection would turn on citizens, particularly women. Ezeilo stressed that the video serves as a painful reminder of the lack of safety many women face and urged for urgent legal and institutional reforms.
The Nigerian Bar Association has also weighed in, demanding justice and offering support to the victim.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the assault was carried out by vigilante operatives. The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects have been identified, though the absence of the victim has slowed down investigations.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting all corps members in the state and warned vigilante groups against misconduct or abuse of authority.
The video has continued to provoke strong reactions across social media and civil society, with growing calls for the disbandment or stricter regulation of local security outfits.
The NYSC headquarters has not yet issued an official statement at the time of filing this report.
