The 8th edition of the Nigeria Private University Games (NPUGA) came to a colorful and energetic close, with Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), emerging as the overall winner of the prestigious inter-university sports competition.
The event, which lasted for 10 days, featured intense competitions in various sports and saw participation from more than 25 private universities across Nigeria.
It was a showcase of youthful energy, athletic excellence, and the spirit of unity among students.
Leeds City University clinched the second position with a total of 21 medals, while Fountain University finished in third place with 20 medals.
Host institution, Babcock finished in fourth place with 18 medals overall
The medal table reflected the high level of competition and the impressive performance of the athletes.
The closing ceremony was a lively affair filled with music, dance, and cheers from students and officials.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Professor Ademola Stephen Tayo, commended the efforts of all athletes, coaches, and schools that took part in the games.
He highlighted the importance of participation beyond just winning, saying, “There is joy in participating. Events like this are not just about medals they are opportunities for student-athletes to build friendships, share academic ideas, and grow through sports.”
Professor Tayo also assured that future editions of NPUGA would see improvements in organization, logistics, and facilities, noting that feedback from this year’s event would be carefully reviewed and acted upon.
The NPUGA games have become a key platform for discovering young sporting talents within Nigeria’s private universities, and this year’s edition lived up to expectations.
With sports ranging from athletics to football, basketball, table tennis, and more, students displayed exceptional skills, determination, and teamwork.
For many participants, the event was not just about competition, but also a memorable experience of cultural exchange, personal development, and networking.
As the curtains fall on the 8th NPUGA, ABUAD walks away with pride, but all universities involved leave with something even more valuable lasting memories, new friendships, and the shared spirit of sportsmanship.
