The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has imposed an indefinite ban on the popular “signing off” celebrations traditionally held by graduating students following their final examinations.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, the institution said the ban takes immediate effect and is aimed at curbing growing incidents of violence, disorder, and security threats associated with the ceremonies.
According to the university, the decision follows multiple cases of chaos, damage to property, and disruption of academic activities often linked to the post-examination celebrations. The management also raised alarm over the frequent presence of unauthorized individuals who infiltrate the campus during these events, thereby posing risks to the safety of both students and staff.
“The university management has observed that the ‘signing off’ practice has degenerated into unruly gatherings, often marked by disorderly conduct and security breaches,” the statement read.
Dr. Okeke warned that any student found participating in the banned activity would face severe disciplinary measures, including possible expulsion.
She also cautioned outsiders against entering the campus to partake in or promote the banned practice, noting that violators risk arrest and prosecution for breach of public peace.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning, the Registrar urged students to focus on their academic responsibilities and report any incidents of misconduct to the appropriate authorities.
