Nigeria’s senior national deaf football team, the Deaf Eagles, started their title defense in style with a 3-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the opening match of the 13th West Africa Deaf Football Tournament (WADSU).

The match, played at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, saw both teams go into halftime without scoring. However, the Deaf Eagles came back stronger in the second half, netting all three goals to secure a convincing win.

With this victory, the Deaf Eagles have taken a big step toward qualifying for the semi-finals and keeping their hopes of retaining the title alive.

The team has previously reached the final ten times and won the tournament five times. They are now aiming for their sixth championship.

Although only a small crowd turned out to watch the match likely due to the stadium’s location the Deaf Eagles were not deterred and executed their game plan effectively.

In other fixtures, Liberia will face Togo at 9 a.m. today (Friday) in a Group B match, while Nigeria will play their second Group A game against Gambia at 4 p.m. A win against Gambia will send Nigeria straight to the semi-finals and one step closer to another title.
