Panic gripped commuters on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Thursday after a cement-laden truck lost control and rammed into a commercial motorcycle at the toll-gate axis, Ota, Ogun State.

The Divisional Commander of the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr. Salau Hammed, who confirmed the incident to NAN, said the truck, marked FGE 268 ZS, suffered brake failure around 2:50 p.m.

According to him, the vehicle, which was coming from Sango, veered off and hit a Bajaj motorcycle, narrowly missing pedestrians.

The rider, however, was not so lucky, as he sustained injuries and was rushed to Ota General Hospital for treatment.

“The injured person, who happened to be a commercial motorcyclist, was taken to Ota General Hospital for intensive care,” Hammed said.

He added that the truck had since been towed away to restore traffic flow along the busy corridor.

The TRACE boss warned drivers to always put their vehicles in good working condition before hitting the road, stressing that speed and mechanical faults were a deadly combination that often leads to avoidable tragedies.
